The Goodjac Chronicles

The Goodjac Chronicles remains a defining touchstone of 1980s adult cinema, capturing the gritty yet magnetic energy of pre-gentrification New York City. Released in 1986 by Bijou Classics, director Michael Goodwin establishes an immersive atmospheric study by anchoring the production inside the legendary Manhattan venue, New York Jacks. Rather than relying on standard pacing, the film adopts an anthology structure where each vignette functions as a distinct psychological portrait, drawing directly from the lived realities and inner desires of its subjects. The character dynamics rely heavily on authentic social spaces, translating the raw, unscripted camaraderie of the iconic jackoff club straight to celluloid. The cast delivers remarkably uninhibited performances, shedding self-consciousness to manifest these specific erotic fantasies with a striking degree of sincerity. By inviting viewers into the conceptual Goodjac Society, Goodwin blurs the boundary between observer and participant, preserving an invaluable historical artifact of urban queer culture and vintage aesthetic expression on film.
