Active Duty

Active Duty delivers a gritty, unapologetic look at military barracks life through the visionary lens of director Paul Barresi. Released in 2001 by Regiment Productions, this retro gem leans heavily into the rugged aesthetic of uniforms, authority figures, and insubordination. Barresi crafts a seedy yet magnetic atmosphere where off-duty soldiers trade military drills for high-stakes power dynamics. The chemistry between the ensemble cast drives the narrative forward with surprising intensity. From Brandon James and the stunning Payne Bryson executing a charged office fantasy to the dynamic pairing of Emilio Sands and the irrepressible Stonie, every encounter explores the push-and-pull of rank and desire. Later vignettes featuring Privates Lee Scott and Junior in the laundry room, followed by Stonie confronting the beefy Mark Slade, maintain an engaging momentum through tight camera work and raw performances. Barresi succeeds by keeping the focus tight on the physical interplay, utilizing close-ups that highlight both the dominance of the tops and the eager responsiveness of the bottoms. While some dialogue and pacing lean into the campy charm of early 2000s adult cinema, the sheer enthusiasm of the actors keeps the runtime endlessly entertaining.
